Last month Sergeant Jerrod M. Glass, USMC, a Drill Instructor at Marine Corps
Recruit Depot San Diego, was charged with 244 counts of abusing recruits. If convicted of all the charges, Sgt Glass could face up to 269.5 years of confinement. On 10 May 2007, two more DIs were arraigned on charges of abusing recruits.
Sergeant Brian M. Wendel, USMC, was charged with assault, maltreatment, and dereliction of duty, his court-martial is scheduled for 10DEC07. (3) Sergeant Robert C. Hankins, USMC, will also face a court-martial for his actions relating to Sergeants Glass and Wendel. In an unrelated case of recruit abuse, Sergeant Mark A. Delarosa, USMC, was charged with assault, maltreatment, orders violation, and making a false official statement. Sgt Delarosa’s court-martial continues on 11SEP07.
Prosecutors allege Sgt Delarosa would inflict pain on his recruits to teach them. Sgt Delarosa called this a “pain retains” approach. On of his former recruits alleges that Sgt Delarosa spit on him while ordering him to exercise, also known as thrashing or pitting a recruit. The same former recruit alleged that Sgt Delarosa kicked him in the shin while correcting his position during drill. Sgt Delarosa’s defense counsel, Capt Patrick J. Callahan, USMC, defends his client stating he is a taskmaster who dreaded the prospect of having one of his recruits die in Iraq because he was not prepared.
Capt Callahan continued, “This is the Marines, not the Air Force, not the Army . . . We push these recruits. We say mean things to recruits.”
UPDATE: Sgt Delarosa was acquitted of all but one of the charges. The sergeant was found not guilty of assault, maltreatment, and making a false official statement. He was, however, found guilty of an orders violation, in that he violated the standard operating procedure (SOP) for recruit training, by throwing a set of keys toward a recruit to have him unlock a door. Normally, with a conviction such as this, there will be no confinement and Sgt Delarosa should be able to continue his career in the Marine Corps. (Note: this is just speculation).
According to officials at the Depot, over the past three years 44 DIs have been disciplined for misconduct involving recruits, and an additional 50 DIs were punished for other violations.

fIRST OF ALL DID YOU KNOW THAT THE RECRUIT WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE MARINE CORPS FOR BEING BIPOLAR, NOT BECUASE OF AN INJURY TO HIS LEG. GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT. AS A MARINE I THINK THE KID SHOULD HAVE SUCKED IT UP, IF ANY OF THESE ALLEGATIONS REALLY HAPPENED
What wimps.
Not as mean…
Not as lean…
Still a Marine!!!
GIRL – I did not write that the recruit was discharged for an injury to his leg. I wrote that the recruit alleged that he was kicked in the leg by Sgt Delarosa. And, as you can see from the update, the members of the court-martial did not believe the recruit, because Sgt Delarosa was acquitted of assault.
yojoe
I saw tonight that Sgt Glass was busted to pvt and 6 months in the brig for ordering a recruit to jump head first into a trash can. Holy moley! The politically correct bullshit has infiltrated my Marine Corps. I am apalled! This D. I. serverved two tours in Iraq. He is trying to train his men to survive.’ 71 to ’77 here these recruits have a real deal. The commadant of the marine corps needs to ball up and support his troops. Unfortunately once he reaches this position he is in the politics of it all. I feel for him. Former Marine Ssgt. Dan Rodda.
I think they’re all cry babies, worse things happened to my platoon and I,…Noone said a thing. Marines have a reputation to uphold for being tough, obviously the kid should have joined the airforce where he could have just poped out his stress card, whimp
what has happened to my beloved marine corps? my platoon was much more severely disciplined than all of this candy a_ _ ed crap, this is the marine corps way, thats why we are lean mean fightin’ machines….! severe discipline is a must, the enemy will be 1000 times harsher than this crap that happened…Bring this young marine out of the brig, reinstate his rank and let him do his job.
so sad that marine corps values being sat on and trash talked whatever happened to honor and integrity if u did something wrong man up for it dont be a bitch and lie marine corps isnt just a career its a way of life as a drill instructor u must teach this way of life to new comers but teaching and doing indescribable methods of punishment is wrong i see pictures of marines flashing west side which if people dont know is gang sign when defending our country i bet gooches marines rolling in there graves of what the corps has turned into acts of violence towards one another hazing to the point a marine dies thats not brothers in arms
Bunch of pussies……….What in the hell as happened to my Marine Corps? If you didn’t get your ass whooped at least once a day by your DI something was wrong……War ain’t no video game and boot camp is tough……get over it and get on with it. Unbelieveable!
I have been to iraq twice during the initial invasion and in 07. I would have to say that if it wasn’t for all the stress that I went through during boot camp(getting fucked up) I would have never made it through combat. Drill Instructors have by far the most important job in the marine corps. The training of today is nothing compared to what other marines went trough to earn the title so if you have a problem maybe you should consider another branch of service.
fuck all that shit some drill instructors are just fucked up in the head exept it
Who were the other 44 marine drill instructor that broke the rules. UA Burn em.
Sgt Delarosa was my Drill instructor it is a descrace that he was even up for those charges
