A Google Search Has A Definite Environmental Impact

According to Alex Wisser-Gross, Ph.D., Environmental Fellow at Harvard University,

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea, according to new research.

While millions of people tap into Google without considering the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2 Boiling a kettle generates about 15g. “Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power,” said Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist whose research on the environmental impact of computing is due out soon. “A Google search has a definite environmental impact.”

As previously discussed on Dreadnaught, you can not enjoy your plasma tv, LCD, Xbox, and reduce your carbon footprint.  So don’t think that you can have a blog about global warming and that you are not making the problem worse, RealClimate.

  1. Two Google Searches, the flap of a butterflies wings, and the next thing you know the levees are breaking in New Orleans and polar bear cubs are drowning in the North Atlantic.

Or maybe not. Come on, if everything damages the environment, then people are going to turn off to the environmental movement altogether.

  2. How much CO2 does reading this site generate?
