Google Earth: Two New Chinese Nuclear-Powered Submarines

It appears there is a continuing problem with submarines being visible on both Google Earth and Microsoft’s Live Search. Last month, the propeller of an U.S. Ohio-Class ballistic-missile submarine was viable on Live Search. Then details of a Russian submarine were posted a city’s website. Now, two Chinese Jin-Class nuclear-ballistic missile submarines have been spotted at the Huludao shipyard.

What national secret will be revealed next?

  1. that’s just frightening.

  2. IT IS DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO CONCEAL, IN THE LONGTERM, A NUCLEAR SUBMARINE SO THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE NOT SURPRISING. THE CHALLENGE AHEAD WILL BE TO LEARN OF THEIR CAPABILITIES, OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS AND CHINESE INTENTIONS FOR THEIR USE. WE CAN THEN COUNTER THE THREAT THEY POSE. DON’T MEAN THIS TO SOUND EASY AS ASW HAS ALWAYS BEEN DIFFICULT AND ONE OF OUR NAVY’S MOST IMPORTANT MISSIONS.

  3. Who could have foreseen these uses for Google Earth. Wow.

  4. google earth is far far less effective than our military recon sat’s. Google earth can really only help countries with little to no sat capability. As a general rule where potential enemies military hardware is concerned if you can see it on google earth there are pictures in the pentagon where they are reading the serial numbers off it.

  5. Lol – Thanks for your insight. Also, if a country has to rely on Google Earth, it is unlikely that said country has the ability to exploit the intel. That is, if you don’t the ability to capture these images, you likely don’t have a sub, missile, or bomber that can strike the target.
