The third season of the HBO show Hard Knocks will feature the Cincinnati Bengals.  For Trojan fans this will be a great year.  The show should feature a number of former USC players, including Rey Maualuga, Carson Palmer, Keith Rivers, and Fostee Rucker.

Jonathan Lee Riches©, or the JRL as he is known on Dreadnaught, is back in the news.  The inmate from Federal Correctional Institution Williamsburg, SC, is to be named the most litigious man by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Terminator Salvation Movie Review

Having seen The Terminator in the theater as a preteen and believing Terminator 2: Judgment Day to be the finest Sci-Fi action movie off all time, it is unnerving to hear that Terminator Salvation is getting such poor reviews.

Anyone who has seen the latest Terminator, it would be great if you gave your reactions.  It is sad to think such a great franchise would have a poor showing.

Maybe we should remove Schwartzenegger from Gov of CA and have him reinvent his classic role.

The Jews Are To Blame For The Current Economic Crisis

In a recent study 2,768 Americans were asked about the amount of blame attributed to the Jews for the current economic crisis.  Participants in the study were asked: “How much blame were the Jews for the financial crisis?”

The possible responses were:

• a great deal
• a lot
• a moderate amount
• a little
• not at all

The results: 24.6 percent of Americans blamed “the Jews” a moderate amount or more, and 38.4 percent attributed some blame to “the Jews.”

When the results were broken down by political party:

• Democrats – 32% blamed the Jews
• Republicans – 18.4% blamed the Jews

This is disquieting to say the least.

While universal suffrage is a cornerstone of democracy in the United States, this study suggests that it may be time to rethink the right to vote for the people responding to this survey who blamed an single ethnic group for our economic circumstance.  This is just a preliminary reaction, but one can not help but to be disturbed by the results of this study.

Should I Replace Big Green Egg With Primo Grill?

For some time now I have owned a Big Green Egg. The problem is that I have a medium BGE, and I need more room for grilling.  I am considering replacing my BGE with a Primo Oval XL.  If anyone out there has any experience, either positive or negative, with the Primo I would be grateful to hear from you.

I hate to lose my BGE, but I just need more room.

President Clinton To Be Named Special Envoy To Haiti

From The Cable,

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton will be named a U.N. special envoy on Haiti this week, sources close to the United Nations tell The Cable.

A UN official confirmed to The Cable that there would be a formal announcement on this Tuesday.

The Clinton Foundation did not immediately respond to queries; nor did the White House.

Drones Are The Only Game In Town For Combating Al Qaeda

According to CIA Director Leon Panetta drones are,

the only game in town in terms of confronting or trying to disrupt the al Qaeda leadership,” Panetta told the Pacific Council on International Policy in Los Angeles.

Pakistan has complained repeatedly about what it says are airstrikes on its territory by U.S.-operated drones. The U.S. military in neighboring Afghanistan does not comment on the attacks, which typically target Islamic militants in the border region, but the United States is the only country operating in the region known to have the capability to launch missiles from remote-controlled aircraft.

The Economics Of Somali Piracy

Over at VC there is a great post by Prof Peter Leeson about the economics of Somali Piracy,

Despite the surge in Somali piracy and encouragement from some employees of the U.S. government, commercial ships aren’t choosing to put armed guards on their vessels. And with good reason: given present conditions, anyway, it’s a bad idea.

As I discuss in The Invisible Hook, like their Caribbean forefathers, Somali pirates are in the business of making money, not harming hostages. Of the 815 hostages Somali pirates took last year, only four died and two were injured under pirate care.

Pirates aren’t treating hostages well because they’re nice guys. They’re treating hostages well because it pays to do so. A dead hostage fetches no ransom and pirates’ business model would collapse if they injured prisoners or allowed them to die. The economics of piracy has a simple bottom line: for all the problems piracy may pose, the threat of dead and injured innocents isn’t one of them.
